“Next big thing” ★★★★ Evening Standard
Emily’s special guests for this evening will be outstanding spoken word artist and composer Marcus Joseph and blues singer Melissa James.
Marcus brings a warm fusion of Jazz, reggae, hip-hop and spoken word to the mix. He was classically trained on the clarinet from the age of seven. After a brief stint in a hip-hop group as a DJ and MC he received airplay on BBC1 Xtra. When he took part in a jazz workshop in London, Marcus was inspired to pick up the saxophone full time and went on to study in Leeds, London and New Orleans.
“The energy, versatility and raw talent of Marcus Joseph’s performance is a deeply inspiring and mesmeric experience.. you should book your ticket immediately” John Berkavitch
“Marcus Joseph, saxophonist turned spoken word artist, is a man who transcends musical boundaries and genres to produce inspiring, optimistic and life-affirming songs” Samuel Chambers (Demon Online)
Melissa James (“Best current British blues singer I know.” BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson) is much more than a blues singer. She is a singer with incredible passion for her cause which, she sees, is to use her voice and her music to form connections with others. Joined on stage by guitarist, Tom Gamble, her music blends folk, gospel, jazz – and life tales – but never without a large helping of the soul which stretches deep beyond her years.
“James takes all of her musical loves – jazz, blues, soul, folk – and wraps them up into songs that achieve an astonishing array of moods and emotions.” – Jazzwise
“Melissa’s vocals are sensitive, soulful and emotional…” – Maverick
